October 3, 2007, 7:00-10:00pm: New York Young Republican Club (the state-party affiliated one) Octoberfest @ Lorely- Come join us at Lorely for a NYYRC Oktoberfest celebration. The first 20 people through the door get a free drink. Enjoy their huge beer selection and try some free appetizers....as long as you get there early! Lorely is at 7 Rivington between Bowery and Chrystie on the Lower East Side.

October 3, 2007, 8:00pm (free admission, cash bar): Lolita Bar Debates present “Is the Ivy League Superior?” YES: David Robinson (of Princeton, Oxford, and formerly ACSH). NO: comedienne/performance artist Michele Carlo. Todd Seavey hosts and Michel Evanchik moderates. The debates, usually pitting two opponents against each other (in a civil and often humorous fashion), take place on the basement level of Lolita Bar at 266 Broome St. at the corner of Allen St. on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, one block south and three west of the Delancey St. F, J, M, Z subway stop.

October 3, 2007, 9:30pm: The NY Post's Robert George will compete for the title of NY's Funniest Reporter. He won the bronze last year and is going for the gold! Gotham Comedy Club, 208 W. 23rd Street! Proceeds go to charity. Call 212-367-9000 for reservations. This show is part of the New York Underground Comedy Festival, running from September 28-October 7.

October 4, 2007, 6:30pm: Metropolitan Republican Club presents First Thursday, its monthly informal social. $10 at the door for members, $15 at the door for non-members, includes all refreshments. Met Club, 122 East 83rd Street (between Lexington and Park).

October 8, 2007, 7:00pm: Ayn Rand Institute on behalf of the Objectivist Club at New York University presents: "Ayn Rand's 'For the New Intellectual' and the Philosophic Interpretation of History," by Dr. John Lewis. Lecture + buffet-style dinner evening with Dr. Lewis. A $20 donation is suggested for non-students. Location: New York University Kimmel Center, E&L Auditorium, 60 Washington Square Park, South. In her view, man's distinctive attribute is his rational faculty, and philosophy is the motor of history. This lecture will dive into this seminal text, consider certain concrete examples from history and the fundamental ideas that explain them, and celebrate the opportunity Ayn Rand provides for the future. John Lewis is a visiting scholar at the Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University. He did his PhD in classical studies at the University of Cambridge, and has taught at the University of London. His university teaching focuses on ancient Greece and Rome, military history and political thought. A writer for "The Objective Standard," his books are "Solon the Thinker: Political Thought in Archaic Athens" (Duckworth Press), "Early Greek Lawgivers" (Bristol Classical Press) and "Nothing Less than Victory" (forthcoming, Princeton University Press).
