February 13, 2007, 6:30pm – 8:00(FREE reception to follow): The Smith Family Foundation presents a debate:The Time for Talks: Can and should the U.S. make deals with Iran and Syria? PARTICIPANTS: Hillel Fradkin, Expert Working Group to the Iraq Study Group & Director, Center for Islam, Democracy and the Future of the Muslim World, The Hudson Institute; Steven Clemons, Senior Fellow & Director, American Strategy Program, The New America Foundation; Justin Logan, Foreign Policy Analyst, Cato Institute; Yaron Brook, former Israeli Military Intelligence Officer & Executive Director, Ayn Rand Institute. EVENT DESCRIPTION: The only consensus about Iraq is that the status quo is unsustainable. The Iraq Study Group recommended direct U.S. dialogue with Syria and Iran. President Bush responded with a dramatically different strategy based on escalation and aggressively disrupting networks in Iraq backed by Syria and Iran. Many see Iran and Syria as unwilling to negotiate, but others say that Iran indicated its willingness to negotiate about its terrorist support and weapons programs three years ago. Is a “grand bargain” with these nations possible? If so, would it be enforceable? Can our problems in Iraq ever be solved without Iraq’s neighbors? If not, what happens if the “surge” fails and the U.S. exits? The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue, (Corner of 34th Street & 5th Avenue).
