April 21, 2005, 6:30pm (prompt): The Donald & Paula Smith Family Foundation Present a debate Tax Reform: Is there a better way? Steve Moore, President, Free Enterprise Fund. Author: Bullish on Bush: How George Bush's Ownership Society Will Make America Stronger. Moderator Jacob Weisberg, editor of Slate, co-author In an Uncertain World. As this year’s tax season comes to a peak, we all become reacquainted with the IRS tax code. Whether we do our taxes on our own, buy software to aid us, or hire a professional, we all recognize that the burden of compliance is significant. Politicians promise “tax reform” but mostly deliver special interest incentives, which make the code more complex. Many people feel that the system has been rigged against them in favor of the wealthy and well connected. Is tax simplification achievable and sustainable? If so, which type of tax reform – Flat, Value Added, or a National Sales – has the best balance of efficiency, equity, and simplicity? (Free and open to the public - Reception to follow). The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York (Corner of 34th Street & 5th Avenue). RSVP on the Smith Family Foundation website.
