Do you know how to irritate a liberal in less than 2 seconds? Just stand on the streets of Manhattan as a Republican registering voters and spreading the word. Want to help us irritate some liberals? Stand with us at our annual Street Fair!!! It's that time again! The young republicans hit the streets and the street fairs to register voters and educate our fellow city residents on what Urban Republicans bring to the table in City government. The NYYRC Street Fair is Saturday, June 4, 2005 from 11am - 5pm. It will run down 7th Ave from 57th to 45th Streets and our booth should be in its usual spot near the Sheraton Hotel on 53rd Street. We will have our annual voter registration and republican recruitment drive, hand out literature on our Urban Republican candidates and platform, sign up new YR members, have raffles and prizes, and have a great, fun-filled day. Plus you get the added bonus of annoying those pesky liberals who believe in free speech for everyone except Republicans (or anyone who disagrees with them!). Before you begin summering in the Hamptons do something for the cause. Join us, even for an hour or two, on this unique afternoon. You have never seen grassroots politics done the way the NYYRC does it!! Email info@nycyr.org if you can volunteer some time for this core grassroots party-building activity.

June 7, 2005, 7:00pm:The Federalist Society's International & National Security Law Practice Group presents a panel: THE EXECUTIVE V. THE JUDICIARY IN THE WAR ON TERRORISM. Confirmed Panelists Include: Mr. Bradford A. Berenson, Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, LLP, Mr. John D. Hutson, Dean and President, Franklin Pierce Law Center and Rear Admiral (ret.); formerly of the Navy JAG, Ms. Barbara Olshansky, Center for Constitutional Rights, Hon. Barrington D. Parker, Jr., United States, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, Mr. David B. Rivkin, Jr., Baker & Hostetler, Hon. Loren A. Smith, Senior Judge, United States Court of Federal Claims, Ms. Mary Jo White, Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and Former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York--Moderator. Since September 11, 2001, most legal debate has focused on the extent of the President's power to wage war and what role Congress should play once it has authorized the use of force. In contrast, our panel will consider the role of the "least dangerous branch" of government--the judicial branch--in wartime. Should courts be highly deferential to the executive in the global war on terrorism? If so, what are the limits to this deference? If not, how far should the courts go? Does the global war on terrorism present special problems for the judiciary? What role did the Founders envision that the courts should play in wartime legal battles? This panel will look at the role of the courts and judges in deciding wartime habeas corpus petitions and challenges to the President's executive and commander-in-chief power to wage war in certain ways. The panel will also consider the courts' tradition of resolving these issues by invoking justiciability doctrines. Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Great Hall, 42 West 44th Street.

June 8, 2005, Brooklyn Young Republican Club Meeting- Speaker will be native Brooklynite Scott Jeffrey, who recently left his long-time job at MTV to become full-time Director of Legalize ( www.Legalize.com), the political action group he founded in 1996. Scott is very Pro-Bush and very Republican and he believes gay marriage, marijuana legalization and nightlife (ending dancing and smoking bans) are conservative issues that provide an opportunity to redefine "Republican" to a new generation. He also believes that Baby Boomers are stuck in a culture war that stifles the independent voice of Gen X. Scott grew up in Park Slope, attended Midwood High School and was the Libertarian candidate for NY Governor in 2002. We are proud to welcome him to our June meeting. 345 78th St(between 3rd & 4th Aves), Bay Ridge.

June 14, 2005, 6:30pm Prompt The Donald & Paula Smith Family Foundation Present a debate on Social security: What are the best solutions for sustainability and improvement? Featuring Pat Toomey, President Club for Growth, David Certner, AARP Federal Affairs Director, Herman Cain, New Voter Alliance CEO, Hilary Shelton, NAACP Washington Burea Director. Moderator Errol Lewis, Columnist, New York Daily News. The President has aggressively made Social Security reform the primary issue of his second term. Polls indicate he has convinced the American public that Social Security has a funding problem, but has been less successful at promoting his private accounts plus progressive indexing solution. Any solution will involve a choice among four alternatives: benefit cuts, tax increases, increased debt, or attempts to increase the rate of return on social security assets. Except for the last --which has its own challenges -- these are not attractive solutions for the public or politicians. Which raises the political question: how are politicians elected at most every six years going to fix a system that will not see funding problems for over a decade? At The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue(Corner of 34th Street & 5th Avenue). (Free and open to the public - Reception to follow). Click here to RSVP for this event.
