October 18, 2004, 3:30pm: "The Mechanisms of the Slippery Slope" by Prof. Eugene Volokh. Commentary & Remarks by Prof. Abner Greene. This event is free and open to the public. At McNally Amphitheater, Fordham Law School, 140 W. 62nd Street (across from Lincoln Center, near Columbus Circle). Presented by: The Fordham Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies
Slippery slope arguments -- we've all made some, and we've all pooh-poohed others. Liberals, conservatives, and libertarians all make them, though in different fields, whether free speech, privacy, abortion, euthanasia, gun control, same-sex marriage, or many others. Do these arguments make sense, and, if so, when? How can we evaluate them better, and make them more effectively? Hear Professor Volokh, author of "The Mechanisms of the Slippery Slope," 116 Harv. L. Rev. 1026 (2003), http://www1.law.ucla.edu/~volokh/slipperyshorter.pdf tell us all about them. Professor Eugene Volokh teaches free speech law, copyright law, the law of government and religion, and a seminar on firearms regulation policy at UCLA Law School. Before coming to UCLA, he clerked for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Alex Kozinski on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Professor Abner Greene teaches Federal Courts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and First Amendment law at Fordham Law School. Prior to Fordham, he clerked for Justice John Paul Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Patricia Wald on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the current state of the legal order. It is founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. The Society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities. This entails reordering priorities within the legal system to place a premium on individual liberty, traditional values, and the rule of law. It also requires restoring the recognition of the importance of these norms among lawyers, judges, and law professors. For more information on the Fordham chapter of the Federalist Society or to learn more about this event, please contact: Meredith Kapushion, President, Fordham Federalist Society mkapushion at yahoo.com (replace at with @)

October 19, 2004, 6:30pm Prompt: The Donald & Paula Smith Family Foundation
Presents a debate: Flip-Flops, Spin, & Outright Lies: Is honesty possible in politics and which party has a stronger claim to it? Featuring Joe Scarborough, Scarborough Country, Author Rome Wasn't Burnt in a Day. Bryan Keefer, Columbia Journalism Review's Campaign Desk, Author All the President’s Spin. Moderator, Harvey Shapiro, Senior Contributing Editor, Institutional Investor. Each side in this presidential contest is using tactics to put their record in the best light and to discredit their opponent’s. This is the nature of a campaign. What is new is the sophistication of these tactics and how rapidly each side is responding to the other. Are these trends a positive development for revealing truth during the campaign, or are the facts getting lost in the rhetoric? If the latter, who is to blame: the politicians, the media, or the voters who can not see through the spin?
